Tom's Vaulting Page

This page is way out of date! I'm too busy as the head coach of the Cascade Vaulters and haven't found time to update it.

Vaulting can best be described as a ancient sport that performs a combination of gymnastics and dance on the back of a moving horse.

I am currently one of the assistant coaches and music director for the Redwing Vaulters (of Redmond, WA).  For more info on what is going on with the Redwing Vaulters, join the Redwing Vaulters mailing list on the Yahoo Groups web site.

Music

Vaulting music on CDs

During the 2002 vaulting season I converted all the Redwing Vaulter's music to digital formats and burned custom CDs for practice and competitions. Having the entire team's music on a single CD made it much easier for our vaulters to routinely practice to music.

I am currently using Easy CD-DA Extractor for ripping CDs, Goldwave for editing music and Roxio's Easy CD Creator 6 for buring CDs.

For the AVA's 2002 National Championships, I also made custom jewel case liners (in the team colors).  And our music won the unofficial "best looking" award.

Original Vaulting Music

This is music I created with eJay software from Voyetra.

Tom's Vaulting Techno #1 (canter beat)
Tom's Techno Trot #1 (trot beat)
Tom's Latin Trot #1 (trot beat)

Sorry but the trot music was lost during a server move and I still haven't gotten around to retrieving it from off line storage.

Ideas

Vaulting Trading Cards

I created this series of 5½" x 8½" cards as a coaching tool to help vaulters and coaches. The most frequently used card is a Kur card that I use to help vaulters develop and memorize their kurs.  I also have designs for a move/exersise card that can be used to explain various kur moves.

The Redwing Workout Worksheet

Too encourage our vaulters to work on their streaching, strength and conditioning outside vaulting practices, I developed a worksheet that helps vaulters remember and track their workout routines.

My Vaulting History

Back in college, one of my close friends, Jen Williams, competing in the sport of Vaulting. She and several a few of her vaulting friends were starting a team in Blacksburg.  I went to a few practices but didn't really get involved in the sport.    In the mid 1990s Jen got me to video tape the twice yearly Great Falls / Topaz 4H Vaulting Fest.  Soon after I moved up the Washington DC area in early 1997, she asked if I would be the longeur for the team she was coaching, Great Falls. My childhood experiences with horses and my love of kids soon got me hooked.

The Great Falls team's main vaulting horse, Murphy, was for several years my big fuzzy buddy.  A photo of the two of us can be found on my home page.

More recently I've moved out to the Seattle WA area and joined the Redwing Vaulters and an Assistant coach and longuer.  During the 2002 vaulting season I've been more involved with the team's music and less involved with the team's two horses, Dervish and Teddy.
