Demo & Open Tryouts More or Less Successful
On Saturday Jan 29th, the we presented our first public event, a demonstration of equestrian vaulting and open tryouts. Turnout was somewhat smaller then we had hoped (about a dozen spectators and one tryout vaulter). But everybody had fun and nobody got hurt, and thus it was a successful vaulting event. It was also a very valuable experience for our club.
The somewhat smaller turnout can be attributed to several factors. Mostly, while planning for this event, we had nothing to base how much publicity we needed to undertake to get a desired amount of turnout. So we erred on the cautious side opting to under do the publicity and get a small turnout rather then over publicize and get more people then we could handle. Also we need to do a better job of on site signing to let attendees know that they found the right place, where to park and where to go when they get out of their cars. And the somewhat soggy/chilly weather wasn't particularly inviting for an outdoor activity.
In the preparations for this event we did manage to recruit two new vaulters, Anna and Athena. Both participated in our demonstration performing various exercises and even short freestyle routines. This brings our club up to four vaulters and will allow us to collect enough dues to lease Auggie though the beginning of the 2005 season.
We are still looking for one or two more vaulters for the 2005 season and are encouraging anyone interested to drop by during one of our regularly scheduled practices.
